Castor oil: what is it and how is it useful?
Castor oil is made from castor bean seeds. It grows in tropical and subtropical latitudes and is cultivated in India, Brazil, China, Egypt, mainly for its oil, which is used in medicine and industry. The name of the plant was given because of the shape and color of its seeds, which resemble mites.
Castor oil, or castor oil, is obtained by cold pressing. Then, if the oil is destined for the pharmaceutical industry, it undergoes refining. The oil, like the whole plant, contains the toxic substance ricin, so it is treated with hot steam. When exposed to temperature, ricin is destroyed, but some of it still remains in the oil, so in case of an overdose (more than 7 g per kilogram of weight), poisoning can occur.
Castor oil contains many ricinoleic acid glycerides, from which ricinoleic acid is produced in the intestines, and castor oil owes its effect to it. In addition, castor oil contains triglycerides of oleic, linoleic, linolenic, stearic and other acids.
Castor oil is used in medicine as a laxative , including before medical research and operations, in obstetric practice to enhance uterine contractions and stimulate labor.
The oil is also suitable for external use. It contains strong antiseptics, so using castor oil you can remove warts and papillomas. The oil is also used for massage and lightening of age spots, for the treatment of wounds and burns, as a nourishing and growth-stimulating agent for hair, against dandruff, and in compresses for joints against arthritis.

How does castor oil work?
Once in the small intestine, the oil reacts with the enzyme lipase, which breaks it down into ricinoleic acid, which irritates the intestinal wall. As a result, peristalsis increases, water is retained in the intestines, thus the volume of its contents increases.
Increased bowel movements, together with undigested oil residues, contribute to the rapid movement of feces, which is why a laxative effect occurs. When the intestines are emptied, the laxative effect will end.
How does castor oil affect the intestines?
Castor oil has a number of benefits for the body:
- the oil acts like a lubricant for our intestines (if you suffer from constipation, this is the best option to eliminate this problem);
- removes all harmful substances and toxins from the body, leaving only the essentials;
- has a beneficial effect on the intestinal microflora as a whole, acting as a protective mechanism (the oil envelops the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines, thereby preventing pathogenic microorganisms from entering the mucous membrane and causing an inflammatory process);
- should be used not only for preventive purposes, but also for massage.
Castor oil is an indispensable assistant for those who:

Castor oil for colon cleansing - instructions for use
Colon cleansing with castor oil requires preliminary preparation. 3-4 days before the start of the course, it is important to follow a low-carbohydrate or slag-free diet as before a colonoscopy (more details on how to eat before an intestinal colonoscopy).
On the eve of taking the oil product, they adhere to a daily fast on water. Only after this do intensive cleansing therapy begin.
Throughout the entire procedure, it is important to limit the consumption of flour and fatty foods, salt, spices, and sweets. An abundance of fiber is recommended in the form of fresh vegetables, fruits, and drinking plenty of fluids.
Dosage calculation: 10 ml of oil per 10 kg of person’s weight. So, if the patient weighs 65 kg, then the single dose will be 70 ml. With minor slagging, 30 ml of oil may be enough for complete cleansing.
How to drink castor oil capsules to cleanse the intestines?
Oil in capsule form is a convenient product due to its lack of taste and ease of use. However, in order to achieve a positive therapeutic result, you need to drink up to the standard per day, because 1 capsule contains 0.5 or 1 g of oil. Capsules are washed down with any liquid, except milk and fermented milk drinks. The laxative effect occurs 4-5 hours after administration.
It is the large volume of capsules per day that often does not become a priority when choosing the form of a castor product. Many patients prefer castor oil in liquid form.
Dose calculation
According to experts, castor oil for cleansing the intestines will be effective if the dose is calculated correctly.
Too little oil will not have the desired effect and will only cause discomfort; too much oil can also cause severe diarrhea, and it will be difficult to drink.
Therefore, the optimal dose of castor oil is 1 milliliter for every kilogram of weight. A bottle of medical castor oil usually contains 30 ml. If a person weighs more than 100 kg, you need to add another 20 milliliters of oil.
Lemon juice is required twice as much in volume. Some people prefer to replace it with orange or grapefruit, which are less sour and less irritating to the stomach.
Indications
Throughout life, the human body accumulates from 5 to 18 kg of intestinal stones, mucus, unprocessed food residues, and helminths. This “good” is stored in the small intestine. No enema will reach here. Castor oil has been used for centuries as a universal cleanser and laxative. Even official medicine recognizes the use of castor oil under certain circumstances:
- Intoxication. The use of a natural laxative makes fecal matter more liquid and removes old accumulations and mucus. Castor bean oil stimulates the liver, dilates the bile ducts, restores the enzymatic properties of bile, and reduces the bilirubin content.
- Acute constipation. According to statistics, 10% of the world's population suffer from incomplete emptying of the lower gastrointestinal tract and impaired motility of the large and small intestines. Most people face the problem of constipation at a certain age, which is due to a passive lifestyle and dietary errors. Castor oil is a safe natural laxative with minimal side effects. Retention of feces in the intestinal tube is not only the cause of poor health (intoxication), but also causes the development of serious diseases such as diverticulitis and hemorrhoids. The main manifestations of the fact that the ability to remove digestive products is reduced are constipation, flatulence, loss of appetite, and bad breath. These symptoms indicate that it is necessary to cleanse the intestines.
- Preparation for diagnostic procedures. For some studies, it is important to remove feces from the intestinal tube, due to possible distortion of the analysis results (X-rays of some parts of the spine).
- Weakness of labor (as an element of complex therapy). There is evidence of increased contractile activity not only of the intestines, but also of the walls of the uterus, stimulating labor. Due to the large number of side effects, this use of castor oil remains questionable.
- Restoring the balance of essential fatty acids necessary for the full functioning of the body (building cell membranes). The human body is not able to produce these substances on its own, so it is important that they always come in the required quantities from the outside.
- Elimination of allergic reactions, including skin manifestations of the disease (acne). The presence of a healthy intestine is one of the factors for the proper functioning of the immune system, which is responsible for the occurrence of allergies. Food agents often act as allergens.
- Inhibition of the growth of fungi of the genus Candida is an important property of castor oil. Being part of the normal microflora of the human intestine, this organism can become a source of various inflammatory reactions and serious diseases. Possessing the enveloping ability and beneficial properties of ricinoleic acid, castor oil prevents the penetration of infectious agents into the upper layers of the intestinal mucosa.
- It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, including on the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. Used to treat chronic forms of colitis and hemorrhoids.
- Due to the antioxidant properties of castor oil fatty acids, free radicals are neutralized, resulting in rejuvenation of the entire body.
- Improving the condition of blood vessels. Regular use of castor oil improves the elasticity of vascular walls, stimulates blood flow, and neutralizes blood congestion.
- Normalization of body weight is achieved by removing excess fluid and intestinal deposits from the body and activating metabolic processes.
- Parasitic infections. As part of antihelminthic therapy, castor oil is used as an evacuation component to facilitate and accelerate the elimination of parasites.
Doctors do not recommend the use of castor oil in the following cases:
- chronic constipation;
- acute inflammatory processes in the intestines (ulcers, appendicitis);
- complex of symptoms of “acute abdomen”;
- gallstones, cholecystitis;
- glomerulonephritis;
- poisoning with fat-soluble elements, male fern extract;
- pregnancy period, to avoid premature birth;
- uterine bleeding;
- the presence of cardiovascular pathologies, because during cleansing a certain amount of potassium is washed out of the body;
- lactation;
- age up to 10–12 years.
The purity of the drug of natural origin does not exclude the occurrence of side effects. All of them are associated either with incorrect dosage or with a specific reaction of the body to individual components of the compound. Undesirable effects appear:
- indigestion (diarrhea);
- spastic pain in the epigastric region;
- dehydration;
- vomiting;
- lazy bowel syndrome;
Indications for use:
- acute constipation;
- poisoning;
- frequent flatulence;
- long-term use of medications;
- food poisoning;
- Diagnosis of the digestive system;
- bad breath;
- rash on the skin of the face and body.
Cleansing the colon with castor bean oil can cause a negative reaction in the body. The ingredients in the drug have an irritating effect: castor oil for cleansing the intestines provokes an exacerbation of stomach or duodenal ulcers, uterine bleeding. It is not advisable for pregnant women to take castor oil - the product increases the tone of the uterus (the condition is fraught with miscarriage).
Contraindications for use:
- irritable bowel syndrome;
- chronic constipation;
- hemorrhoids, colitis;
- acute phase of chronic diseases of the digestive tract;
- intestinal obstruction;
- cholelithiasis;
- pathology of the heart or vascular system in the stage of decompensation;
- age up to 12 years.
What happens after taking castor oil
The time after which the effect occurs varies individually. For some it is 40 minutes, for others it is more. The laxative effect lasts approximately 2-6 hours, after bowel movement it gradually ends. Therefore, after taking the oil you need to stay at home. You may want to go to the toilet several times, your stomach may churn and hurt.
To speed up the action, you can massage your stomach or twirl the hoop. During the cleansing process, a lot of water comes out, which is retained in the intestines as a result of the irritating effect of oil on its walls. You can also detect parasites that have left the body, separated due to the antiseptic effect of castor oil.
Preparing for cleansing with castor oil
Ban on carbonated drinks
Before cleansing the intestines with castor oil, the body is prepared. 5-7 days before the scheduled date, exclude fatty foods, confectionery, alcoholic and colored carbonated drinks.
The diet includes porridge with water, soups with vegetable broth, dairy products, fresh vegetables in salads dressed with olive oil, and fruits. The last meal before cleansing the digestive system is allowed 3 hours before the procedure.
Colon cleansing is an intimate procedure, so patients avoid outside participation in it. Hence the popularity of at-home colon cleansing methods. If there are no contraindications described in the instructions, you can safely begin the procedure. A week before cleansing activities and for several days after them, a special nutrition system is important:
- Before cleansing, you need to give your body a rest on a light diet of cereals, low-fat cottage cheese, kefir, vegetables and fruits.
- Eliminate fatty foods from your diet.
- A few days before the intended cleansing, it would be advisable to introduce sunflower or other types of vegetable oils into the diet - they soften toxins, facilitating their subsequent removal.
- After the procedure, you should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Saline solutions and mineral water are suitable for this to normalize the balance of electrolytes.
Side effects
To relieve this unpleasant sensation, castor oil is immediately washed down with lemon or orange juice; you can mix the oil with the juice in a blender. If nausea does not go away, you need to take some raisins and chew them thoroughly. To avoid such an unpleasant effect, many people prefer to take the oil at night, since nausea is not felt during sleep.
Due to the strong laxative effect, a slight malaise may appear: weakness, headache, abdominal pain. Ricinoleic acid, which is absorbed in some amount, causes a decrease in concentration and reaction rate, so it is better not to drive after the procedure.
Sometimes severe diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting are observed. During the next day, frequent bowel movements are possible, and sometimes constipation occurs after cleansing.
Colon cleansing with cognac and castor oil
In folk medicine, cognac has long been used as an effective and safe remedy for worms, since tannins and grape alcohol have antiparasitic properties after infusion in a barrel.
Attention! Self-medication may be harmful to health; consult your doctor before use.
Combining centuries of experience and modern knowledge in the field of parasitology, traditional healers have developed a method of getting rid of parasites using cognac with castor oil:
- Before you start cleaning, purchase a bottle of 3-5 star cognac. It is important that the drink is real, aged in an oak barrel. Alcohol containing dyes and flavors is not suitable for cleaning.
- Castor oil is also required. The drug in 50 g bottles is preferable. Castor oil in capsules acts more slowly. But for children and patients with a strong gag reflex it is allowed to take capsules.
- Take cleansers at night because there is a high chance that it will be difficult to leave the house the next day. It is better to schedule the beginning of the cleaning on a day off, preferably on the waning moon. It is most convenient to mark the dates of the procedures on the calendar:
- 5 nights – taking medications;
- 10 days – break;
- 5 nights – taking medications;
- 7 days – break;
- 5 nights – taking medications.
- 7–14 days before starting to take cognac with castor oil, it is better to give up food of animal origin, sweets (except honey), pickles and marinades, and coffee. The diet should consist of cereals (except semolina), mild vegetable dishes, vegetable salads dressed with vegetable oil, and fruits. Tea is replaced with herbal infusions: mint, nettle, thyme. It is recommended to give enemas of 2 liters of water with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar every day or at least every 1-2 days.
- On the day before starting the cleanse, a light dinner should be no later than 18:00.
- At 2 am, drink 2 tablespoons of cognac and 2 tablespoons of strong sweet tea. The norm for a child under 12 years old is 2 times less (1 tablespoon each).
- After half an hour, drink 50 g of castor oil (the norm for a child is 30 g). It will be easier to drink the oil slightly warmed in a water bath. To get rid of the unpleasant aftertaste, castor oil can be washed down with a sip of lemon or grapefruit juice.
- At about 5 am you should have a bowel movement. However, this depends on individual characteristics and the degree of slagging in the body.
- After completing the course for at least 3 weeks, drink a tablespoon of flaxseed oil every morning half an hour before meals, which will destroy pathogenic microflora in the intestines.
- It is recommended that deworming be carried out once a year.
Benefits of cleansing with castor oil and cognac
At 2 a.m. the peak of helminth activity occurs. Therefore, people infected with parasites often wake up from hunger at this time and go to the refrigerator. Sweet tea is a bait for worms, and cognac kills some of them, others simply fall off the inner walls of the intestines (usually parasites stick to the walls with the help of suction cups). Thanks to castor oil, helminths leave the body along with feces.
The inner surface of the intestine is covered with cilia, which facilitate the movement of waste products towards the anus. Due to improper nutrition, eyelashes become covered with mucus and do not perform their functions well. Enemas before starting to take cognac with castor oil are done in order to get rid of fecal stones and clear mucus from the eyelashes.
In the literature, you sometimes find advice to drink castor oil and cognac in the morning or at 7 p.m. But cleansers in the morning are not as effective as at night. In addition, in this case you will generally have to stay at home all day.
Maximum activity of the large intestine occurs between 5 and 7 am. Cleaning from parasites at 19 o'clock deprives the intestines (and at the same time its owner) of rest for the whole night.
Other castor oil cleansing recipes
Not only is pure castor oil used to cleanse the intestines, reviews show that you can use oil with bran or cognac. It is believed that the latter method expels worms.
- Cleansing with castor oil, kefir and bran. To do this, you need to take one tablespoon of kefir and bran and a teaspoon of castor oil. Drink the mixture before bed. You should not eat for several hours before this.
- Cleansing with castor oil and cognac. The mixture includes equal amounts of castor oil, cognac and kefir (this last ingredient is optional) - 80 ml of each. This composition is also taken before bed. According to reviews, taking castor oil with cognac to cleanse the intestines helps well against worms.
Some doctors believe that the dose of castor oil according to the above methods is too large, and recommend taking 15-30 ml of castor oil at a time. It should be noted that a dose of oil of more than 10 g has a laxative effect.
How to clean
People who are planning to flush the digestive tract using this method should have good health and a positive attitude, and the instructions for using castor oil to cleanse the intestines should be carefully studied.
The oily solution can be used either alone or by mixing it with other ingredients: lemon juice, fermented milk drinks, cognac, bran.
As an independent cleanser, the solution should be taken 15-30 ml before bedtime for 3 days. The drug can be taken once at a dosage of 1 ml per 1 kg of weight at night.
Taking the product is recommended at night. The onset of the cleansing effect will occur closer to the morning in the form of copious and frequent bowel movements. You should be prepared for the fact that the product has an unpleasant taste and smell. To reduce discomfort, it is recommended to prepare lemon juice in advance and drink castor oil when nausea occurs. After completing the cleansing, you must adhere to the diet for 3-4 days.
Castor oil with lemon
It is quite difficult to use the oil solution in its pure form, which is why many patients prefer to mix the product with other ingredients. One popular recipe is to cleanse the intestines with castor oil and lemon.
It is necessary to prepare castor oil at the rate of 1 ml per 1 kg of weight, as well as several lemons. A person weighing 90 kg requires 90 ml of solution, or 3 vials of 30 ml. Juice is squeezed out of the fruit, the volume of which should be twice the amount of oily liquid.
Heat the oil in a water bath, add lemon juice, mix thoroughly and drink in one gulp. Some people prefer to drink the oily solution first, then the juice: this will not change the effect.
The gag reflexes and nausea that arise can be relieved by eating raisins or a piece of citrus.
The urge to evacuate occurs 2-6 hours after taking the liquid and depends on the dose taken and the person’s state of health.
Cognac and castor oil
Colon cleansing with castor oil and cognac is suitable for people suffering from helminthic infestations. For the cleaning process, you need good quality cognac, an oil solution and green tea. The cleansing procedure is carried out at night: it is believed that helminths are more active at night.
Cognac and oily liquid are taken in equal quantities, for example, 50-80 ml of each ingredient. The composition is thoroughly mixed and drunk on an empty stomach for 3 days.
If the purpose of cleansing is to get rid of parasites, then a quarter of an hour after taking the mixture you should drink sweet green tea: this will help provoke the activity of worms.
Castor oil and kefir
The combination of these ingredients leads to a strong weakening effect, but has a milder effect. The fermented milk drink neutralizes the bad taste of oil and reduces nausea.
The components are mixed in equal proportions and drunk in one gulp before bedtime. You should avoid eating 24 hours before cleaning.
Another option for preparing the mixture involves adding bran. For one glass of kefir - 1 tablespoon of oil and 1 tablespoon of bran. The ingredients are mixed and consumed at one time.
A combination of castor and linseed oils will give a good cleansing effect. Add 1 teaspoon of each ingredient to a glass of water and mix thoroughly. Consume the mixture at a time on an empty stomach. This drink promotes the rapid removal of harmful substances and breakdown products from internal organs and stimulates lipid metabolism.

People's opinions about this cleaning method vary. Some people prefer more modern bowel lavage products. However, many supporters of alternative medicine note the pronounced effect of the product, maximum cleansing after the procedure, improvement in well-being and appearance after washing.
A healthy intestine is the basis of good health and vitality. Regardless of which method is chosen, it is necessary to follow all recommendations for use, and also consult with your doctor first.
First, let's talk about the properties and nutritional value of this product. It contains a huge amount of ascorbic acid, vitamin A and P. The juice of the fruit contains potassium, which is vital for the cardiovascular system. In addition, it contains a lot of minerals, essential oils, flavonoids and tannin.
The basic principle of cleansing the body with the help of this fruit is based on the stimulation of the “bile” life cycle, when uric acid is removed from the body. Lemon is known for being one of the most powerful detoxifiers and solvents Mother Nature could create. During the first procedures, it dissolves toxins. Then it provides regenerative support, since this fruit contains substances that have regenerative properties.
There were even cases when, with the help of lemon, it was possible to remove very toxic metals from the human body that no other means could remove.
Some methods of cleansing the body require a lot of effort, special training, and take a lot of time. Others take a long time to act, and the positive effect does not appear immediately. Castor oil cleansing is a quick way to cleanse the intestines, which does not require much action. You just need to drink castor oil with lemon and wait for the results.
Contraindications
This method of colon cleansing is quite aggressive, so it is not suitable for everyone. There are also contraindications. You cannot clean with castor oil:
- children under 12 years old;
- pregnant women;
- nursing women;
- those who have cardiovascular diseases;
- with gastrointestinal diseases, etc.
If you have a chronic disease, you should first consult with your doctor.
Contraindications
No matter how effective castor oil is for cleansing the intestines and no matter how positive the reviews are, this method has its contraindications.
Conditions in which taking castor oil for cleansing is contraindicated are:
- pregnancy, as the oil increases uterine contractions and causes a rush of blood to the pelvis, which can lead to premature birth or miscarriage;
- lactation;
- children under 12 years of age;
- intestinal obstruction;
- chronic constipation;
- stomach and duodenal ulcers;
- glomerulonephritis, acute and chronic;
- acute intestinal diseases such as appendicitis;
- abdominal pain of unknown origin;
- exacerbation of any chronic diseases.
How to cleanse the intestines with castor oil
Important to know! Castor oil should not be taken in combination with anthelmintic (helminthic) drugs and fat-soluble medications, as they reduce its therapeutic effect. You cannot combine castor oil with fern preparations, as this may result in poisoning by the fat-soluble substances of this plant.
There is an opinion that with the help of castor oil you can lose weight, but weight loss after the procedure is associated with the release of large amounts of water and feces, and not with the breakdown of fat, so the effect will be temporary, like with any laxative. Therefore, it cannot be used for weight loss.
Be careful! You should not take castor oil more than once a week, like any other laxatives. Their frequent use can lead to loss of fluid, electrolytes and vitamins, in particular A and D, and disruption of the intestinal microflora, which will be harmful to health.
Also, frequent use of laxatives leads to the fact that the intestines lose the ability to cleanse themselves, its peristalsis is disrupted, and constipation begins.
You should not take castor oil as a laxative for more than three days in a row. It is better to consult a doctor before using the oil, especially if you have any health problems. If you suffer from chronic constipation, you also need to find out their cause, and not self-medicate.

Is it possible to take castor oil as a preventive measure?
There is no point in taking laxatives for prevention. If there are no problems with the stool, you should not interfere with its natural work, otherwise it may “get lazy”, because its function is stimulated. It is much more difficult to cure intestinal atony later than to overcome one-time constipation. Laxatives should be used strictly according to indications.

Weight loss
Some people prefer to lose weight with castor oil, but its effect is rather dubious.
- Dehydration. The body begins to lose a large percentage of fluid if the drug is used uncontrollably, due to this it may seem that the person is losing weight and losing weight, but this is very dangerous.
- Decreased appetite. Long-term use sometimes causes a side effect that is desirable for some groups of people - loss of interest in food. Against this background, digestion and absorption of beneficial microelements and vitamins deteriorate, and the body is under constant stress. Usually he begins to store fat, which does not contribute to the goal of losing weight.
- Emptying the bowel. Some believe that the less food was in the body, the less time to gain extra pounds. It's a delusion. Food is digested and nutrients are absorbed throughout the gastrointestinal tract; by the end of the journey, only waste remains that does not affect excess weight.
Getting rid of toxins
The myth about them is very common. People, especially older people, try by all means to “cleanse themselves.” The intestines cleanse themselves; there cannot be long-term deposits in it. If waste products remained somewhere in its loops, people would quickly understand that something was wrong with the body - severe symptoms of intoxication would arise, which only doctors could cope with, and not laxatives and hunger strikes.

The pharmacy chain offers modern laxatives, but ricin oil remains in demand. Practitioners give a positive assessment of castor oil as a means of having a laxative effect. Patients also note the effectiveness of colon cleansing with ricin oil.
